Luffy Gear 5 (Nika) figures: a collector's guide to choosing yours

· Updated · 4 min read

A pirate who laughs while he fights. That is Luffy in Gear 5, and it is why he works so well as a figure.

On Luffy Gear 5 figures
In short

Gear 5 is the awakened form of Luffy's Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. As a figure it is recognizable at once: white hair and clothes, clouds around him and a very expressive pose.

To get started, decide what size fits, check whether the piece is PVC or resin and set aside a spot in a display case away from direct sunlight. Options run from about 16 cm up to 30 cm pieces.

If you collect One Piece figures, Luffy in Gear 5 is probably the most sought-after piece of recent years. We explain what this transformation is, how to choose a figure, how to display it and which pieces to start with.

What is Gear 5?

It is the awakening of the fruit Luffy ate. It was revealed in the manga in 2022 and reached the anime in 2023. In this form Luffy becomes elastic in an almost cartoon-like way: he stretches his body, plays with his surroundings and fights with humor. That mix of power and fun is what studios try to capture in every figure.

What to look for in a Gear 5 figure

Manufacturers interpret the form in very different ways. Before buying, look at this:

  • Size. There are small pieces of about 16 cm, easy to place on any shelf, and 30 cm pieces that call for a case of their own.
  • Material. PVC is lighter and common in mid-sized pieces. Resin usually gives more detail and weight, but it is also more delicate.
  • Effects. Some pieces include lightning, clouds or an aura in translucent parts. They look spectacular, but take more space and should be cleaned carefully.
  • Studio. Each studio has its own painting and proportion style. If you like a piece, note the studio name and look for others by them.

The best Gear 5 figure is the one that conveys movement: if it looks like Luffy is about to move, it is well made. Our criterion when choosing

How to display it

A closed display case keeps dust off. Avoid direct sunlight, because over time it can fade the paint, and do not place it near heat sources. To clean it, a soft brush or a dry cloth is usually enough. If the piece has separate effects, remove them carefully and do not force the thin parts.

Three Luffy Gear 5 figures to start with

A small, easy-to-place piece. If this is your first Luffy figure, a PVC piece of about 16 cm is a safe bet: it fits on any shelf and usually has a moderate price.

A mid-sized piece with effects. Around 23 cm is a good middle ground between presence and space. Here the lightning effects help the pose look more dynamic.

A centerpiece for the case. At 30 cm and with a translucent aura, it is a figure designed to be the heart of the collection.
